What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine holistically examines the root cause of illness. Book a consultation with Dr Matt le Roux to receive personalised medical treatment.

What is Functional Medicine?

The Functional Medicine model is a personalised, patient-centred, scientific approach to healthcare, in which patients and practitioners collaborate to address hidden causes of disease and promote optimal wellbeing. The Functional Medicine approach positions patients at the centre of the narrative – the patient is who we treat, not the disease.

This approach requires a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic uniqueness, biochemical individuality, and lifestyle factors. These data points are used to design personalised treatment plans that improve patient outcomes across a variety of health issues. This approach also recognises that there is a web-like interconnection of all systems of the body. Practitioners identify the intricacies of the specific disease by addressing the ‘root cause’ rather than focusing on symptoms. One condition could have many different causes, and, likewise, one cause could result in many conditions. As such, Functional Medicine targets the particular expression of disease in each individual.

Functional Medicine

A few years ago, I realised that traditional chiropractic fell a little short of the needs of some of my patients. The chiropractic profession offered numerous benefits to many patients through the profession’s art, history, and science. However, I encountered more complex cases where pain ended up not having a structural origin. This was when I discovered biochemical individuality, which means that every person is unique. Furthermore, everyone has a different set of circumstances that contributed to our current concerns. For example, many of my patients complain of fatigue, intestinal upset, insomnia, musculoskeletal pain, low libido, etc. I realised that the mainstream approaches benefitted some but failed others. So I wondered, how can I fill the gap or complement current methods?

Balance Protocol

The framework that I use is called Balance Protocol. It is a powerful systems biology approach that addresses the entire person, sets the ‘order of operations,’ and considers all four factors that influence an individual’s wellbeing: environment, lifestyle, mindset, and nutrition. Balance Protocol is unique; the solution is more expansive than what we typically find in basic Functional Medicine, Functional Nutrition, the Natural Medicine realm, or other holistic approaches where the toolbox is mostly dietary supplements and/or diets. Instead, the interconnectivity of various factors (e.g., mental health, how much you move, light, air) are considered for a more comprehensive solution.

What to expect during your first Functional Medicine consultation

When visiting a Functional Medicine practitioner, expect to spend a lot more time with them than you would with a regular provider. A significant part of Functional Medicine is first to understand your concern and unique contributing factors to chronic disease and dysfunction by exploring your family and personal medical history, the circumstances when you experienced your first symptoms, and your specific health journey. Next, the practitioner will ask about your environment, lifestyle, mindset, and nutrition. You can expect to do most of the talking!

A Functional Medicine provider will do a detailed physical examination to identify any visible clues about what might be contributing to your condition. They may also recommend that you submit various samples for laboratory tests; some of the testings are the same ones used by traditional clinicians, but others are functional tests that can help determine the causes of your concern
